NASHVILLE, Tenn.- A piece of Tennessee history has gone viral. A letter from a freed slave to his former owner has been making the rounds lately from Facebook to Twitter.

The letter first appeared in the Cincinnati Commercial in 1865, then again in the New York Daily Tribune a short time later. The letter is apparently a response to Jourdon Anderson's former owner, and his offer to come back to Big Spring, Tennessee, near Johnson City, and to resume work on the farm.

The letter begins: "Sir: I got your letter, and was glad to find that you had not forgotten (me) and that you wanted me to come back and live with you again..."

He goes on to say that he and his wife, who was also a slave, "have concluded to test your sincerity by asking you to send us our wages for the time we served you. This will make us forget and forgive old scores, and rely on your justice and friendship in the future."

In closing, he writes...

"Say howdy to George Carter, and thank him for taking the pistol from you when you were shooting at me."

A tax tip from IRS.gov

Your kids can be helpful at tax time. That doesn't mean they'll sort your tax receipts or refill your coffee, but those charming children may help you qualify for some valuable tax benefits. Here are 10 things the IRS wants parents to consider when filing their taxes this year.

1. Dependents

In most cases, a child can be claimed as a dependent in the year they were born. For more information see IRS Publication 501, Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information.

2. Child Tax Credit

You may be able to take this credit for each of your children under age 17. If you do not benefit from the full amount of the Child Tax Credit, you may be eligible for the Additional Child Tax Credit. For more information see IRS Publication 972, Child Tax Credit.

3. Child and Dependent Care Credit

You may be able to claim this credit if you pay someone to care for your child or children under age 13 so that you can work or look for work. See IRS Publication 503, Child and Dependent Care Expenses.

4. Earned Income Tax Credit

The EITC is a tax benefit for certain people who work and have earned income from wages, self-employment or farming. EITC reduces the amount of tax you owe and may also give you a refund. IRS Publication 596, Earned Income Credit, has more details.

5. Adoption Credit

You may be able to take a tax credit for qualifying expenses paid to adopt an eligible child. If you claim the adoption credit, you must file a paper tax return with required adoption-related documents. For details, see the instructions for IRS Form 8839, Qualified Adoption Expenses.

6. Children with earned income

If your child has income earned from working, they may be required to file a tax return. For more information, see IRS Publication 501.

7. Children with investment income

Under certain circumstances a child's investment income may be taxed at their parent's tax rate. For more information, see IRS Publication 929, Tax Rules for Children and Dependents.

8. Higher education credits

Education tax credits can help offset the costs of higher education. The American Opportunity and the Lifetime Learning Credits are education credits that can reduce your federal income tax dollar-for-dollar. See IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education, for details.

9. Student loan interest

You may be able to deduct interest paid on a qualified student loan, even if you do not itemize your deductions. For more information, see IRS Publication 970.

TRIGG COUNRY, Ky .- There are new development coming in on the accident that left a huge hole in the middle of a Kentucky bridge. Monday, divers checked out the debris from this wreck last Thursday, when a ship operated by Foss Maritime hit the Eggner's Ferry Bridge in Trigg County and tore off a section of it.

Foss has submitted salvage plans to the coast guard to get the ship out of the way, so that the bridge can be repaired. They'll have to remove the debris from the ship and from the lake, in order to do that.

Two cranes have been brought to the site of the crash, and will begin the operation as soon as it's approved.

BRENTWOOD, Tenn .- A 65-year-old driver told police he was mad because an ambulance was blocking his car, so he decided to move it.

Warren Melamed was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor, unauthorized use of a class A vehicle.

Mount Juliet Police say the two ambulance drivers were taking a patient out of a home on a stretcher at 3:30 Saturday morning, when they say this man, Melamed, attempted to drive the ambulance away. Police say the Brentwood resident was angry because the ambulance was blocking him in, and he was trying to move it.

Luckily, they were able to stop Melamed from moving the ambulance.

TRIGG COUNTY, Ky .- Engineers are still working to figure-out what caused a ship to crash into the Eggner Ferry Bridge, all the while assessing exactly how much damage was done.

Saturday, dive-teams were preparing to place sensors on the pier that will allow them to determine whether the remaining portions of the bridge are structurally sound.

The eastern portion of the bridge is the main concern. Sensors will help indicate if it's likely to collapse.

All the information will be used to determine if temporary fixes can be made or if the whole bridge simply has to be replaced. It's a headache for those in the area who now have to add at least 30 minutes to their trip as a detour. Drivers are advised to use Interstate 24. "The Trace" is open to motorists, but is closed to commercial vehicles.

Friday, NewsChannel 5 spoke with Robert and Debbie Parker, the first travelers to venture over the damaged bridge; and, lucky for them, avert a crisis.

"My wish was: I want to be here to see my grand baby and live for my children," said eyewitness Debbie Parker.

Lucky for the Parkers, they knew something wasn't right and Robert slammed-on the brakes.
