An elderly gentleman....

An elderly gentleman....
Had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%
The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, 'Your hearing is perfect.. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.'
The gentleman replied, 'Oh, I haven't told my family yet.
I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!'

1900 View Damage of Eggner's Ferry Bridge
1900 View Damage of Eggner's Ferry Bridge

TRIGG COUNTY, Ky .- It's been more than one week since a barge crashed into the Eggner's Ferry Bridge causing part of it to collapse. Ever since, people were issued tickets for ignoring roadblocks to get a glimpse of the damage. Saturday, those roadblocks were removed for a couple of hours while thousands came to get a closer look.
It's one thing to see the images on the news. It's something quite different to see the damage with your own eyes.
"This is a pretty little community, but this is something to see," Hopkinsville resident Bernie Schmitt said as she walked towards the area designated for the public.
That's why nearly 1,900 people made the quarter mile trek from their cars, because the Eggner's Ferry Bridge is more than a connection from Cadiz to Maury. It's a connection to memories.
"I fished here all my life and I never thought I'd see anything like this," Hopkinsville resident Gary Hightower explained.
The bridge was no match for Delta Mariner's force.
"Either the lights were not working or the captain wasn't," Hopkinsville resident Mickey Schmitt said, pausing in the middle of his sentence. "Somebody is at fault to do this kind of damage," he continued.
"I can see the road on top of…actually the concrete on top of the boat itself," Hightower added as he looked at the damage. "I don't know. It's eerie. It's really eerie."
Part of the bridge is draped over the bow. According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the debris is anchoring the ship in the water. Now the process has begun to remove it.
Curiosity has been building for more than a week.
"That bridge has been there since 1932. It's been bumped, and it's been rubbed but it's never been demolished," Hightower added.
Still, the sight of the damage does not answer lingering questions.
"To see it in person, it makes it real, it's real now," Bernie Schmitt said.
Those road closures are back in place. Anyone who ignores them will be given a citation. As for the salvage work, that's expected to last for an indefinite period of time.

State Senator Asked To Leave Knoxville Restaurant
State Senator Asked To Leave Knoxville Restaurant

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The owner of a Knoxville restaurant ordered a Tennessee state senator to leave her establishment Sunday.
Republican State Senator Stacey Campfield has made headlines with controversial remarks and bills, including his so-called "Don't Say Gay" legislation.
Martha Boggs, owner of Bistro at the Bijou, told the Knoxville NewsSentinel that refusing to serve Campfield was "her way of standing up to a bully."
She also told the paper she thinks Campfield has, "gone from being stupid to dangerous."
Boggs said Campfield left the business graciously.
Monday's menu board at the restaurant read, "Fried chicken, crispy chicken livers, No Stacey."
Bridge Work On Hold While Coast Guard Awaits Plan
Bridge Work On Hold While Coast Guard Awaits Plan

AURORA, Ky. (AP) - Demolition on part of a collapsed western Kentucky bridge is on hold until a final salvage plan is reviewed and approved.
U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Ron Easley said the final plan is close to being done and a review of it usually takes a few days.
Klenck Company of Evansville, Indiana, is set to demolish a span of the Eggner's Ferry Bridge near Aurora lying across the bow of the Delta Mariner in Kentucky Lake. Company spokesman V. Nicholas Funke told The Paducah Sun that the plan is to sheer the steel trusses away from the sides of the boat.
The boat hauling rocket parts struck the bridge after dark on January 26, pulling away part of the span. The cause of the collision is under investigation.

Letter From Former Slave To Master Goes Viral
Letter From Former Slave To Master Goes Viral
NASHVILLE, Tenn.- A piece of Tennessee history has gone viral. A letter from a freed slave to his former owner has been making the rounds lately from Facebook to Twitter.
The letter first appeared in the Cincinnati Commercial in 1865, then again in the New York Daily Tribune a short time later. The letter is apparently a response to Jourdon Anderson's former owner, and his offer to come back to Big Spring, Tennessee, near Johnson City, and to resume work on the farm.
The letter begins: "Sir: I got your letter, and was glad to find that you had not forgotten (me) and that you wanted me to come back and live with you again..."
He goes on to say that he and his wife, who was also a slave, "have concluded to test your sincerity by asking you to send us our wages for the time we served you. This will make us forget and forgive old scores, and rely on your justice and friendship in the future."
In closing, he writes...
"Say howdy to George Carter, and thank him for taking the pistol from you when you were shooting at me."

Tax Tip: IRS reminds parents of 10 tax benefits

A tax tip from IRS.gov
Your kids can be helpful at tax time. That doesn't mean they'll sort your tax receipts or refill your coffee, but those charming children may help you qualify for some valuable tax benefits. Here are 10 things the IRS wants parents to consider when filing their taxes this year.
1. Dependents
In most cases, a child can be claimed as a dependent in the year they were born. For more information see IRS Publication 501, Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information.
2. Child Tax Credit
You may be able to take this credit for each of your children under age 17. If you do not benefit from the full amount of the Child Tax Credit, you may be eligible for the Additional Child Tax Credit. For more information see IRS Publication 972, Child Tax Credit.
3. Child and Dependent Care Credit
You may be able to claim this credit if you pay someone to care for your child or children under age 13 so that you can work or look for work. See IRS Publication 503, Child and Dependent Care Expenses.
4. Earned Income Tax Credit
The EITC is a tax benefit for certain people who work and have earned income from wages, self-employment or farming. EITC reduces the amount of tax you owe and may also give you a refund. IRS Publication 596, Earned Income Credit, has more details.
5. Adoption Credit
You may be able to take a tax credit for qualifying expenses paid to adopt an eligible child. If you claim the adoption credit, you must file a paper tax return with required adoption-related documents. For details, see the instructions for IRS Form 8839, Qualified Adoption Expenses.
6. Children with earned income
If your child has income earned from working, they may be required to file a tax return. For more information, see IRS Publication 501.
7. Children with investment income
Under certain circumstances a child's investment income may be taxed at their parent's tax rate. For more information, see IRS Publication 929, Tax Rules for Children and Dependents.
8. Higher education credits
Education tax credits can help offset the costs of higher education. The American Opportunity and the Lifetime Learning Credits are education credits that can reduce your federal income tax dollar-for-dollar. See IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education, for details.
9. Student loan interest
You may be able to deduct interest paid on a qualified student loan, even if you do not itemize your deductions. For more information, see IRS Publication 970.
